Granada is a city in Nicaragua, Central America, located at 11.94° North, 85.96° West, on the western shore of Lake Nicaragua, and about 18 km north of the Pacific Ocean shore. The city is dominated by the Mombacho volcano. Granada's estimated population was some 92,000 people in 2002. Granada is the capital of Nicaragua's Granada Department. It is also the future of Nicaraguan tourism, now that many Americans, Canadians, French and Italians have settled into the city.

Granada was founded in 1524 by Francisco Fernández de Córdoba and was long the principle city in the Nicaragua region of New Spain. It was raided by pirates from France and England in the 17th century.

granada     image 2 Granada is one of the most beautiful places in Cental America. After Nicaragua became independent from spain, Granada alternated with León, Nicaragua as the capital of Nicaragua (Granada was preferred by Conservative regimes and León by Liberal ones) until the national capital was permanently established at Managua in 1858.

Granada was long a center of commerce, including woods, cacao, and gold and silver working.

Granada remains Nicaragua's third largest city, and is known for preserving some fine Colonial architecture.

Mombacho is a volcano in Nicaragua, near the city of Granada. It is 1345 metres high. Location: 11.83° North. 85.98° West. Home to one of the most beautiful remaining areas of tropical rainforest in Nicaragua, it contains some flora and fauna that are unique to this area. It has been declared a Natural Reserve. Ten minutes away from Granada city (Nicaragua). The volcano has fantastic view of lake Cocibolca and it's islands, and two crater rim with a cool temperature.

granada     image 3 Mombacho is an active volcano but it has been sleeping since 1570, when the last eruption occured. There is no historical knowledge of earlier eruptions. There are more than 700 different plants registered around Mombacho. Included are many species of orchids.
