San Salvador, El SalvadorSan Salvador is the largest city in El Salvador and the principal center for the entire country. It takes only a few hours to get from the capital to any point in the country, so the city makes a convenient base. The declining economy during the war set off an internal migration of people from the countryside to the city, which expanded with new urban poor. Unemployment is high and people do whatever they can to get by. Some districts, such as San Benito and Colonia Escalon are as luxurious as any well-to-do neighborhoods in wealthier countries, while other areas of the city are large colonies of shacks made of corrugated tin and mud, balancing precariously on the edges of polluted rivers.
Despite its long history, there are no old buildings to see. The city has been destroyed several times - by earthquakes in 1854 and 1873, by the most recent eruption of the San Salvador Volcano in 1917, and yet again by floods in 1934. The earthquake of October 10, 1986, caused considerable damage in San Salvador.
