Belize City

Belize city is the largest city of Belize and former capital, located on the coast of the Caribbean Sea. The tropical storms that periodically razed the town in the 19th and early 20th centuries still arrive to do damage to its aging wooden buildings, but they also flush out the open drainage canals, redolent with pollution, that crisscross the town. When there's no storm, Belize City bustles and swelters. In 1961 it was destroyed by hurricane, nearly 250 people lost their lives and destroyed much property. Shortlty afterward the government decided to built new capital in the interior ; this new center is Belmopan, and its location is designed to stimulate occupation of the backlands. In 18th century thousands of African slaves brought in by the British. Belize city is served by Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport.
