Lamanai
Lamanai means "submerged crocodile" in Mayan language. It is located 60 KM from Orange Walk(95KM North of Belize city) and can be reached by bus or scenic boat ride through dense jungle. Along the way you can see local birds, Crocodiles and some wild animals.
In Lamanai you can see most impressive archaeological structures, most notably the Mask Temple, Temple of the Jaguar Masks and High Temple.
Unlike many other sites, Maya lived here until the coming of the Spaniards in the 1500s. The ruined Indian church (actually two of them) to be found nearby attests to the fact that there were Maya here for the Spanish friars to convert.
