San Antonio

The Mopan Maya of San Antonio are descended from former inhabitants of the Guatemalan village of San Luis Paten, just across the border. The San Antonians fled oppression in their home country to find freedom in Belize. About six km west of San Antonio, near the village of Santa Cruz, is the archaeological site of Uxbenka, with numerous carved stelae. South of San Antonio about 15 krn lies the village of Blue Creek, and beyond it the nature reserve of Blue Creek Cave. Hike into the site along the marked trail and enjoy the rain forest around you, as well as the pools, channels, caves and refreshingly cool waters of the creek system.
