Xunantunich

Xunantunich, the ancient Maya city has not been extensively restored, and the jungle has grown around and over the excavated temples. During the Classic period, a ceremonial center flourished here. Its name means "Stone Woman" in the Maya language, and, like many names given to Maya archaeological sites, is a modern name; the ancient name is currently unknown.Archaeologists have uncovered evidence that an earthquake damaged the city badly about 900 AD, after which it may have been largely abandoned.
